Jess Goes to National Age Group Championships

Jess Sanders-Wyatt is 11 years of age, swims for Newton Abbot swimming club and has been  achieving fantastic results within sport. 

Jess was a real water baby and began swimming unaided at the age of 20 months, she joined  Newton Abbot swimming club at the age of 5 and went staraight into stage 5, skipping the baby pool altogether.

At the age of 9 Jess gained qualifying times and competed in her first Devon county championships and amazingly came 3rd in the 200 metre backstroke and finaled in the 200m freetyle.

In 2010 she was the 10 year old Devon Bagcat champion, Bagcats are awarded on a points scheme, for different strokes and distances, Jess gained her first Bagcat by coming 1st in the 200m back and 200m free, 2nd in the 200m individual medley and 3rd in the 200m fly.

Following her sucess in the Devon’s she gained qualifying times for the South West regional competition. Her results were outstanding for her first Wests gaining a 2nd placing in the 100m butterfly and reaching the finals in another 8 events which included the 200m free, 200m back, 200m fly, 100m free, 100m back  and 200m individual medley.

In the July of 2010 the Western sprints were held, Jess achieved 2nd in the10 year old age group bagcat award by swimming into 1st place in the 50m fly, 1st in the 50m back, 2nd in the50m free, 8th in the 50m breaststroke and 4th in the 100m individual medley.

Later that year Jess and her family battled throught the snow to Millfield to compete in the Plymouth Leander open meet where she astonishingly managed to knocked a further 6 seconds off her entry time for her 200m back and 4 seconds off her 100m back.

At the Newton Abbot swimming club presentation held in January 2011 Jess was voted female swimmer of the year 2010.

Jess started her 2011 campaign with fantastic results at the Devon county championships by touching in 1st place in the 400m Freestyle, winning by 23 seconds and taking a massive 22 seconds off her entry time. She also came 1st in the100m back, 200m back and 100m individual medley, 2nd in the100m free,  200m individual medley, 200m fly, 100m fly and 4th in the 200m free.  Jess also gained an amazing 8 western county qualifying times and for a second year in a row became Bagcat award winner for being the best 11 year old.

In May of this year Jess swam in the Exeter annual open meet, where she fought and won the 200m back and gained a national qualifying time of 2.35.30 , she also won the 100m back.

This month Jess travelled futher afield to Millfield  over 2 consecutive weekends for the West regional championships where she swam her heart out and achieved a 2nd place in the 200m backstroke and  400m freestyle. Jess finaled in all the events she entered.

At the end of July Jess will be travelling to Sheffield arena to compete in the prestigious National age group championships, this is the highest competition Jessica can swim at for her age.
