WATER POLO MATCH REPORTS

18 May, 2009,

A strong Newton Abbot Men’s team travelled to Bath University for a Bristol and West League Match and ran out 15-1 winners. Following an early goal from Phil Shears, Bath equalised quickly in what proved to be their only score of the game.  Andy Barry scored a hat trick of goals for Newton in the first half, bringing the score to 4-1 at the end of Quarter 1. Barry scored a further goal in Q.2, and Wayne England also added to Newton’s goal tally.  Shears, Richard Glanville and Rob Harvey made the score sheet in Q3 with a goal apiece, and a disheartened home side let in 6 further goals in the final quarter, with Shears, Harvey and Glanville all completing hat-tricks and Barry adding a further goal to bring his total to 5.  Also playing for Newton: Ben Davis, Greg Latto, Jon Trist, Phil Whiting, Dave Shrubb and Jack Beer

Newton’s u19 side travelled to Kingsbridge for a Devon u19 league game. Ed and Richard Glanville were on good form, scoring the first 5 of Newton’s goals between them inside the first 4 minutes, before the home side pulled one back. The brothers scored a further goal apiece in the second quarter, before Kingsbridge pulled a goal back, making the score 7-2.  Kingsbridge scored a quick goal at the start of Q3, making the score 7-3, but Ryan Rogers and Jack Beer then scored for Newton. Benjamin Jordan scored a goal in the final quarter and Richard Glanville completed his hat-trick as Newton ran out 11-3 winners in a scrappy encounter. Alex Morrison, Jon Trist and Tommy Whiting completed Newton’s line up.

Newton Abbot’s men’s team were beaten 13-7 away at Exeter in a Devon Cup match.  A strange handicapping decision gave the stronger Exeter side a 6-0 lead, so the official scoreline for the match read 19-7 in Exeter’s favour.  This was an action-packed match, with plenty of incidents and goals.  Andy Barry scored a quick goal for Newton but Exeter fought back to a 3-1 lead after Q1, and extended this lead to 9-2 at the end of Q2, Phil Shears having scored for the visitors. Shears completed his hat-trick in Q3 and Barry also scored one more, with Exeter only managing to score once – 10-5 to Exeter. Newton attacked vigorously at the start of the final quarter with Shears and Rob Harvey managing to score for Newton, but Exeter rallied with 3 further goals in the final minutes of the match.  Also playing for Newton Abbot: Dave Sercombe, Steve Jones, Jon Trist, Phil Whiting, Derryn Westacott, Wayne England, Jack Beer and Dan Taylor.

Newton Abbot Ladies incurred their first defeat of the season, playing at home (Lympstone Marine Camp) to a strong team from Bath University in a Bristol and West League match. In a highly physical match, the visitors proved too strong for Newton’s less-experienced squad. Bath’s opening goal was equalised by one from Laura Shears, before the visitors took a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Bath came out very strongly in Q2, scoring 4 further goals, although in Q3, Shears scored again before the visitors extended their lead to 6-2.  However in the final quarter the University girls’ physical strength and good swimming ability enabled them to score a further 6 goals as they marked Newton’s goalscorers out of the game, leaving Newton disappointed with the 13-2 defeat, despite a good effort on their part. Newton Abbot’s squad: Lyn Shears, Paris James, Faye Drinkwater, Sue Webb, Laura Trist, Hayley Beer, Amber James, Jess Shears and Annie Tinsley.

Newton Abbot Ladies travelled to Newquay and secured a 7-2 win in a Devon league fixture. Newton’s fluid passing and competent shooting, made this game a pleasure to watch. Laura Shears scored the first of her 3 goals early in the first quarter, and Newton achieved a 4-0 lead with Shears completing her hat-trick and goals from Sue Webb and Amber James, before Newquay replied with a goal at the end of Q3.  Lynn Shears and Katie Trist both made it onto the score sheet in the final quarter, and the home side also scored again.  Also playing for Newton Abbot: Paris James, Faye Drinkwater, Louise McGowan, Laura Trist, Jessica Shears and Annie Tinsley.

Newton Abbot’s Mens played host to a team from Bath Uni at Lympstone and ran out comfortable 20-2 winners in a Bristol and West League match.

Phil Shears scored the first of his goals mid-way through the first quarter and this set the scene for Newton’s win, with Shears completing his hat-trick and Darrin Westacott and Rob Harvey also making it onto the scoresheet before the end of the quarter, with Bristol also missing a penalty. Newcomer to Newton’s side, Graham Litt, had a comfortable match in goal.  The Unit side pulled a goal back at the start of Q2, followed by 2 goals apiece from Harvey, Greg Latto and Dave Shrubb.

Richard Glanville scored a hat-trick in Q3 and there were further goals from Steve Jones, Westacott and Latto, bringing the score to 2, Bristol having scored a goal and missed another penalty.  Latto completed his 6 goal tally in the final quarter, rounding off a good win for Newton.
