WATER POLO MATCH REPORTS

1 June, 2009,

Newton Abbot Ladies played a Devon League match away at Exeter Pyramids and secured a comfortable 15-1 win against a young Exeter side. The visitors achieved a 5 goal lead by the end of Q1, with an on-form Faye Drinkwater scoring 4 and one goal from Laura Shears: at the other end, Newton’s goalkeeper had few shots to trouble her.  However, Exeter scored quickly at the start of the next quarter before Lyn Shears scored for Newton, followed by 2 quick goals from Andy Ayres – 8-1 to Newton Abbot.  Amber James and Laura Shears scored for Newton in Q3: Q4 saw a further goal for Drinkwater, 2 for Sue Webb, Ayres completed her hat-trick and Jess Shears also scored.  Newton Abbot’s squad was completed by Paris James, Katie Trist, Hayley Beer, Laura Trist and Annie Tinsley.

Newton Abbot Ladies played their return League fixture at home (Lympstone Marine Camp) against Newquay.  Newton achieved a convincing 11-2 victory with 2 goals in the opening quarter for Faye Drinkwater.  Andy Ayres scored 2 for Newton in Q2 and Laura Shears extended Newton’s lead to 5-0 before Newquay pulled one back, having missed a penalty earlier in the quarter.  Q3 saw Newton extend their lead by a further 4 goals – Laura Shears and Faye Drinkwater each completing their hat-trick and a goal from Jess Shears. Hayley Beer and Lyn Shears each scored at the start of the final quarter just before Newquay pulled one back.  Also competing for Newton Abbot: KatieTrist, Louise McGowan, Laura Trist, Amber James.

Newton Abbot’s u17 side played Paignton in a Devon league fixture at Clennon Valley.  This was a very close encounter for the first 2 quarters, as both teams played a tight defensive game and several scoring chances were missed by both sides.

Paignton opened the scoring before Newton equalised with a goal from Ed Glanville, but Paignton edged ahead again at the end of the first quarter.  Paignton extended their lead to 3-1 in Q-2, before Jack Beer pulled a goal back for Newton Abbot - 3-2 to Paignton.  Beer equalised the score for Newton Abbot with a goal from halfway at the start of Q3, which sparked off some exciting play from his team mates: Beer completed his hat-trick and a goal apiece was scored by Laura Shears and Ryan Rogers. Shears and Beer again made the score sheet in the final quarter to ensure a final 9-3 victory for Newton Abbot.  Newton’s squad was completed by Alex Morrison (who put in a good performance in goal), Tom McLeman, Ed Joffe, Louise McGowan, Ryan Rogers, Tommy Whiting and Jess Shears.
