Teignbridge Council celebrated the best and brightest sporting talents at the Teignbridge Sports Personality of the Year Awards. The event was held on Friday 25th April at the Langstone Cliff Hotel, Dawlish and saw three of our club members shortlisted in recognition of their achievements.
Jess Twose (12) was shortlisted for the Junior Sportswomen of the Year category. This category was in recognition of an individual who has achieved local, regional or national success within their sport in 2007. Jess was awarded 3rd place in this category.
During 2007 Jess won
both the Devon & Western Counties (Millfield) at her first attempt and
qualified for the National Finals at Sheffield in her favoured event
the 100m Backstroke. This year she has already won the Devons, and broken
the 50M Backstroke record by over a second (held since 2002 by Claudia
Coleman who went on to attend the 2003 European Youth Olympics!). Jess currently has the 2nd fastest time in the UK on 50M Backstroke, and
6th fastest over 100M.
Holly Willing
was also successful at the Ceremony as part of Bovey Tracey Lifesaving Club. The Lifesaving Club was nominated for and won The Senior Team of the Year Award. An award in recognition of a team who have achieved notable successes at a local, regional or national level.
Special recognition should go to another NASC member John Pugh, who won 2nd place in the Services to Sport (Community) category. This was awarded in recognition of an individual who has shown true dedicated service to a given club or sport within the community.
John (77) joined NASC in 1964 and has never missed the Club's Annual Awards
event in all those 44 years! John is always down on pool side on Sunday
evenings, where he has taught hundreds of children to swim - always as a
volunteer, happily giving of his time each week. His direct, somewhat
uncompromising style has ensured that the children have achieved their goals
in either learning to swim or taking their abilities further by competing
for the club. His wife Betty was also a club stalwart being subscriptions
secretary for 20 years! |
