DEVON COUNTY INTERCLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

20th April 2008

Newton Abbot Swimming Club finished in 7th place in the recent Devon County Interclub championships. In an event dominated by Plymouth Leander, the largest Club in Devon, who won over 2/3 of the events, Newton swimmers did well to achieve top-6 places in 8 races.

The first race, the girls 11u 50m Free, set the tone for an exciting competition: less than one second separated the first 4 home, with Newton’s Abbie Carne being narrowly edged into 3rd place.  An on-form Carne went on to win the 50m Backstroke event in her age group. A further winner was Sammie Basham, who won the 11u 50m Breaststroke in a good Personal Best time.
County Champion and national qualifier Jessica Twose (aged 12) was also in good form: in her own 13u age group Twose came 4th in the 50m fly and took second place in the 50m Back (PB).  She also swam up an age group in the 100m Back and finished 3rd. Sophie Jenkins came 5th in the 15u 100m Fly and Ed Glanville achieved an excellent 6 second PB in the same event. Newton’s best result in the Relay events was achieved by the 13u Mixed Medley Team, who finished 4th.

Ryan Rogers and Chloe Kemp both swam well in the 13u age group, each recording 2 top 8 places and 2 Personal Best times. PBs were also achieved by Guy Bennett, Adam Boulton, Jamie Bishop, Lewis Hailstone, Sam Fice, Emma Garrett, Richard Glanville, and Niall Grant.
