14th Exeter Sprint Meet

Newton Abbot Swimming Club’s younger swimmers produced some excellent performances at the 14th Annual Exeter Sprint Meet, held at Pyramids Leisure Centre.
Newton were strongly represented in the 10u & 11u girls’ age groups: this was particularly evident in the final of the girls 11u 50m Backstroke, when the Club produced 4 of the 6 finalists. Abi Carne, Nicole Wickens and Lara Cosford all swam Personal Bests and recorded times under 40 seconds, finishing 3rd, 5th and 6th respectively, with Jessica Twose winning the gold medal in this, her favoured event. Emmy Shaddick and Abbie Clarke came 12th and 14th, both with PBs.
For the 10 year olds, Charlotte Wright recorded a 6 second PB, and PBs were also swum by Sammy Basham, Emma Silk, Brogan Mace and Yelena Alton.
In the 50m Fly Charlotte Wright finished 3rd in the 10 years age group (PB); in the 11 year age group Twose secured a further gold (PB) and the silver medal went to Lara Cosford (PB). Nicole Wickens came 4th and Abi Carne 9th (both PBs). In the 50m Free, Wright won the silver medal and there were top-10 finishes for Basham and Silk (both PBs). Mace and Alton recorded 3 second PBs. In this event Jessica Twose and Lara Cosford (PB) finished 1st and 2nd respectively for the 11 year olds, with Abi Carne also securing a finalist’s medal. Wickens finished 7th (PB).
In the Breaststroke event both Wright (3rd) Basham (4th) and Silk recorded good PBs. Twose and Wickens were 11 years’ finalists, both swimming PBs in achieving their respective 3rd and 5th places. There were also PBs for Cosford (8th), Carne, Alysha Prowse and Emmy Shaddick.
In his first Open Meet, 9 year old Sam Booth won 3 medals, finishing 4th in the 50m Free, 5th in the 50m Back and won the silver medal in the 100m IM, with PBs in all 3 events. For the 10 year old boys, Tom Normington reached the finals of all the 50m events, his best performance being a gold medal winning swim in the Fly. He also came 4th in the 100m IM and achieved Personal Best times in all 5 events. There were top 10 finishes and PBs for 10 year old Ben Gauntlett; 11 year old Guy Bennett reached 3 finals, including a 4th place in the Fly. Niall Grant (12) Lewis Hailstone and Tom Carne (both aged 13) and Tom Burford (15) all recorded good PBs, with Grant and Hailstone reaching the Breaststroke finals in their respective agegroups.
Newton’s girls also produced some good times in the final event of the day, the 100m IM. Sophie Irons (13) (winner of the silver medal in the 50m Breast) came 5th; Nicole Wickens (11) won the bronze medal (PB) and there were PBs for Abi Carne, Abbie Clarke, Emmy Shaddick and Alysha Prowse. Charlotte Wright took the gold medal for the 10year olds (PB). Amy Tozer also competed in this age group and Personal Best times were swum by Brogan Mace and Yelena Alton. |
