| NEWTON ABBOT LADIES' WINNERS OF THE 2007 DEVON LEAGUE/CUP |

Newton Abbot Ladies' water polo team were the proud winners of the 2007 Devon League/Cup competition, a round robin tournament played at Teignmouth Lido against a combined Kingsbridge/Exeter team, and Newquay. The first match, between the 2 visiting sides, ended in a 12-2 victory to Newquay. This was followed by a tough game between Newquay and Newton
Abbot: the visitors went 1-0 up in the first quarter, but following staunch defending, Sue Webb equalised for Newton at the start of Q2. Newquay again went ahead, but Lynn Shears then equalised for the home side. Laura Trist scored the only goal in Q3 for Newton, but unfortunately they were unable to retain their lead, as Newquay scored again in the final quarter, the match therefore ending in a 3-3 draw. This meant an exciting final match between Newton Abbot and Kingsbridge/Exeter, as the outcome of the tournament depended on total goals scored. Newton launched straight into the attack and were 2-0 up at the end of Q1 with goals from Faye Drinkwater and Jess Shears. Newton continued to pressurise their opponents in Q2 and further goals followed from Anita Holmes, Lynn Shears (2) Drinkwater (2) and Webb, giving the home side an 8-0 lead. Hayley Beer scored for Newton at the start of Q3 and a further goal from J Shears brought the score to 10-0. Newton added further goals in Q4 from Drinkwater, Laura Shears (2) and Lynn Shears, but their opponents then fought back and scored 3 quick goals in the dying moments of the match, bringing the final score to 14-3.Goalkeeping duties were shared between S Webb, Lynn Shears, A Holmes, F Drinkwater, L Trist and Amber James; also playing for Newton Abbot were Katie Trist and Charlotte Joffe. |
