20 Newton Abbot Swimmers competed in 77 events at the inaugural Tiverton Sparkler Open Meet, held on 3 November and enjoyed a good set of results. In the 200m Fly, 10 year old Charlotte Wright came 3rd and Yelena Alton was 6th (PB). 11year old Nicole Wickens won the event in her age group. Wright won the 200m Free, Emma Silk was 4th (PB) and there were good PBs for Brogan Mace and Yelena Alton. In the 11 year old girls’ age group, there was an exciting finish to the 200m Free race, with Nicole Wickens just edging team mate Lara Cosford into 2nd place by .5 second, both good PBs. PBs were also recorded in this event by Sammy Basham, Emmy Shaddick and Jessica Knapman. Benjamin Gauntlett and Peter Cock finished 3rd and 5th respectively in the Boys 10 years 200m Free, and Guy Bennett (11) came 4th, as did 12 year old Ryan Rogers (PB). Peter Cock and George Fitter each swam good PBs in the 50m Breast, and Rogers took 3rd place in the 100m Back (PB). Tom Normington (10) won the boys’ 50m Fly (PB).
In the 200m IM, Wright came 3rd for the 10 year olds, and the 11 year old girls’ event was dominated by Newton swimmers, with 5 top 10 finishes. Wickens (PB) took the gold medal ahead of Abi Carne (PB), with Cosford finishing 3rd. Emmy Shaddick finished 6th (PB). Wright secured a further win in the 10 years’ 50 m Free (PB) and Abbi Carne won the silver medal for the 11 year olds.
In the Boys’ 200m IM, Tom Normington (10) won the silver medal, and Gauntlett finished 4th, both with good PBs, and these results were repeated in the 50m Back. Rogers came 4th and Grant 6th (both PBs) in the 12 years age group of the 200m IM. Niall Grant took the bronze medal in the 100m Breast (PB). There were further medal for the boys in the 50m Free, Gauntlett finishing 2nd and Cock 3rd for the 10 year olds, and Bennett 3rd in the 11 years age group. Abbi Carne took the bronze medal in the girls 200m Breast (PB) and Wickens was 4th. Gauntlett came 2nd in this event in the 10 years age group and Grant won the gold medal for the 12 year olds (both good PBs).
11 year old Lara Cosford won the 100m Free (PB) and Abbi Carne came 4th (PB). Emmy Shaddick won the girls 11 years 200m Back (PB) and Sammy Basham took the silver medal.
