Swimmers from Newton Abbot were out in force at the 2007 Torquay Leander Christmas Open Meet and some excellent performances across the board resulted in the Club winning the “Best Team” award for the 3rd consecutive year. Four swimmers, Anya Bishop (aged 9), Lara Cosford (11), Jessica Twose (12) and Ryan Rogers (12), each won the award for top swimmer in their age group.
10 year old Ben Gauntlett finished 3rd in the 50m Free; and Emma Silk took the gold medal in the same event. In the 9 year old girls’ age group, gold and silver medals in the 100m IM went to Newton swimmers, Anya Bishop and Kate Burford respectively. Bishop went on to take 3 further 1st places in the 50m Free, Back and Fly events. Ryan Rogers won the 100m IM for the 12 year old boys, with Niall Grant in 4th place. Jess Twose (12) was 2nd in the 100m IM, adding to the gold medals she won in the 50m Free, Fly and Back events. Chloe Kemp (12) came 3rd in the 100mIm and went one better winning the silver medal in the 50m Breast. Rogers added to his medal haul with silvers in the Breast and Freestyle and gold in the Fly and Backstroke.
Niall Grant finished 3rd in the 50m Fly and Breast, as did Kate Burford in the 50m Back and Free.
In the 11 year old boys age groups there were medals for Guy Bennett (3rd – 50m Back), Tommy Whiting (3rd – 50mm Fly and Free, 100m IM and 1st place 50m Breast), Newton’s 11 year old girls were prominent in the medals table, as demonstrated in the 100m IM, where 4 of the top 5 places went to Newton Abbot swimmers. Nicole Wickens won the gold medal, with Lara Cosford, Charlotte Wright and Abbi Carne in 3rd, 4th and 5th place respectively. Cosford squeezed Wickens into 2nd place by .23 second in the 50m Fly, with Wright finishing 3rd in the 50m Breast, just ahead of Wickens in 4th place. Cosford took a further gold medal in the 50 m Free, with Wickens 3rd and Carne 4th. In the 50m Back, Newton swimmers took the first 3 places, with Carne coming out on top, followed by Cosford and Wickens in 2nd and 3rd place.
Adam Boulton, Tom Burford, Emma Garrett and Sophie Irons in the 14Yrs/Over age group, Irons was a finalist in the 50m Breast, with Boulton winning the silver medal in the same event.
