Newton Abbot had 32 swimmers with Devon qualifying times in some 110 events throughout the individual championships held over three weekends at Plymouth, Exeter and Tiverton.
Between them they amassed 69 PB’s and reached 24 finals – an excellent effort with the likes of Plymouth Leander and Kelly College fielding very strong teams.
Star performances came from Sam Booth aged 10 who gained a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke and a bronze in the 200m IM.
Jessica Sanders Wyatt (10) pulled out a 14 second PB in her 200m backstroke to win an excellent bronze medal and another 13 second PB to make the finals of the 200m freestyle.
Chloe Kemp (13) received a well deserved bronze in her favoured 200m breaststroke as well a 4th place in the 800m freestyle and a finalist in the 100m breaststroke.
Ryan Rogers (14) achieved a bronze in the 50m Backstroke, with three 4th places in the 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, and 100m IM.
Adam Boulton (18) qualified in 6th place for the final of the Open 100m breaststroke championship, but managed to pull out all the stops to gain a brilliant silver medal backed up with a 5th place in the 100m IM.
Their team mates also made the finals in the following events:- Jamie Lowden (9) 100m IM, Rosie Allen (10) 200m breaststroke and 200m IM, Sammy Basham (12) 800m freestyle, 100m and 200m breaststroke, Becky Cooper (16) 100m IM and 200m backstroke, Ed Glanville (15) in the 100m fly, Nicole Wickens (13) 800m freestyle, Charlotte Wright (who entered 11 events narrowly missing 3 finals) made the final in the 200m IM and Sophie Irons (15) just pipped to a medal in 4th in the 50m breaststroke, a 5th in 100m breaststroke and a 6th in 100 IM.
The younger age groups in particular had a series of impressive results in which the likes of Molly Burford, Jamie Lowden, Oliver Palmer, Jessica Sanders Wyatt all aged 9, Rosie Allen, Sam Booth, Kate Burford, Eric Perkin aged 10 improving their personal best times in various 200m strokes by 10 to 15 seconds and in Molly’s case by a staggering 29 seconds.
Other competitors included Tom Burford, Ben Gauntlett (11), Ben Gauntlett (13), Richard Glanville, Lewis Hailstone, Sophie Jenkins, Brogan Mace, Gabby Martin, Emmy Shaddick, Emma Silk & Tom Whiting many of whom also gained new PB’s. |
