NEWTON ABBOT’S WATER POLO TEAMS HAVE BEEN IN ACTION IN JUNE & JULY

Newton Abbot’s Water Polo teams have been in action in several matches recently. The u15 side completed both Home and Away Devon League fixtures against Paignton, winning the Home leg at Teignmouth Lido by 8 goals to 6, and drawing 6-6 in the return fixture at Clennon Valley a few days later. In the home match, Paignton took an early lead but Laura Shears equalised a minute later, scoring the first of her 4 goals. A tight 2nd quarter saw the 2 sides drawing 3-3, but Newton edged ahead with goals from Tommy Whiting and Thomas Wadeley-Jones. Paignton went on the attack again to level the scores at 5-5, but Newton scored 3 further goals in the last quarter, with Wadeley-Jones completing his hat trick.

At Paignton, the home side went 3-0 up in the first quarter, before Newton settled, with Wadeley- Jones opening the scoring for them – he finally scored a goal in each Quarter. There was a goal apiece in Q2, and Q3 saw some defensive play from both sides, but the visitors held the advantage at the end of Q3, with a scoreline of 5-4, following goals from Paris James and Laura Shears. The last quarter saw a lot of competitive action as both sides went all out for the win, and Newton were unlucky to concede the draw, with Paignton equalising in the very last minute of the match.

Also in the squad for these 2 matches: - Alex Snowball, Beth Jones, Ryan Rogers, Laura-Beth Morrison, Guy Bennett and Chloe Roberts.

Newton’s u19 team also forced Paignton to a draw, playing away at Clennon Valley. The match opened with both sides playing very defensively and at the end of Q2 the score was just 2-1 in Newton’s favour, Max Morrison scoring both goals: in completing his hat trick in Q3 the visitors stretched their lead to 3-1. Paignton were not prepared to concede victory lightly however, and Q4 saw a lot of exciting goalmouth action at both ends.  Following a further goal from Morrison, a good effort from Jack Beer increased Newton’s lead to 5-1 before Paignton started to put sustained pressure on Newton’s defence, the visitors conceding 2 goals in the final minute of the match, which ended 5-5.  Also playing for Newton Abbot: - Ben Davis, Jonathon Trist, Ed Joffe, Guillaume Godbhere, Alex Morrison and Phil Ross.

Newton’s 1st Team were in Bristol & West League action at home to Bristol Central, in a match which ended in an 11-8 win for Newton Abbot. Top goal scorer for Newton was Andy Margetts (5) with 4 goals from Andy Barry. Bowden and Greg Latto also featured amongst the goal scorers in a close-fought match which really came to life in the final quarter, when Newton edged ahead from 6-5 at the end of Q3, to lead 8-7, before the visitors equalised again, 5 minutes from the end. Two goals inside a minute saw Newton move ahead again, and the home side held on to their lead with some good defensive play in the final few minutes of the match.
