NEWTON ABBOT WATER POLO PLAYERS PLAYED FOR DEVON COUNTY

Four Newton Abbot players were selected to play for Devon in the recent 2008 ASA SW Inter-County Championships, played at Millfield School, Somerset.

Tommy Whiting (aged 12) and Laura Shears (13), both played well in the Devon u15s’ winning side, demonstrating the skills learned at their weekly visits to the Regional Training Centre. Devon won their first match against Dorset by 23 goals to 6, with Whiting scoring 2 goals and Shears a very impressive 4. Gloucester then beat Dorset 26-7, before taking on Devon to decide the Championship. This match proved to be more of a defensive struggle, but Shears again featured amongst the Devon goalscorers, and Whiting will be remembered for his last minute goal which secured a 7-6 win for Devon.

Richard Glanville and Jonathon Trist (both aged 17) played for the Devon u19 side. Gloucester beat Dorset 18-2 in the first match in this age group, and then went on to play Devon.  Devon had a shock 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and Trist scored in Q2 within 30 seconds of taking the field. Gloucester proved too strong for Devon however, and ran out 12-6 winners, giving them the Championship title. This meant that in the final match, Dorset played Devon to decide the 2nd place. Glanville, playing on his 17th birthday, scored the opening goal for Devon, the first of 4 he scored in the match. Devon settled into their stride part-way through the match and defeated Dorset by 12 goals to 6 to finish 2nd overall in the competition.
